The small coastal town of Serenity Bay is no longer a serene getaway as it once was; it's now Hell on earth, and its people are spontaneously combusting. Ex-SFPD Inspector Phyllis Blessing moves back to Serenity Bay after her husband and son die in a freak accident. She hopes to find the innocence of childhood and the comfort of family. But when both her aunt and uncle are mysteriously killed, she becomes entangled in a bizarre investigation involving balls of light that speed across the night sky. Along the way, she picks up a group of misfit allies: Madam Volga, the Gypsy fortuneteller, and Lucy McDanell, a girl who believes a vampire visits her in dreams. Phyllis also discovers a Faerie Realm, or Otherworld, where she meets her most trusted ally, an elf named Gideon. Banding together is the only hope of this group of misfits to survive The Burning.

Reviews

"This book [The Burning] is a compelling, page-turning read, with a wounded heroine, mythical beings, and some very quirky characters in a small seaside town ... a book I couldn't put down."

Rosemary Laurey, OHIOana Quarterly

"The Burning contains plenty of suspense and plot twists!"

Lisa Hurley, Tracy's Book Reviews

"THE BURNING is a must read! 5Stars. The Burning is the third of Fred Wiehe's books that I have read. All three have been excellent. Be prepared for some twists and a few surprises with this story. I highly recommend it."

Scott Grueninger, Ohio, 3/11/02

"The Burning had an interesting character and used mythology to create an innovative fantasy, something different from the usual dancing elves and Tolkien clones (not that I have anything against Tolkien--I'm just tired of bad imitations). This novel is fresh and new, an enjoyable read. 5Stars."

James Arthur Anderson, Miami, FL, 6/20/2003
